`The Princess and I are extremely happy to return to visit Vietnam on the occasion of the two countries celebrating the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations,` Crown Prince Akishino said during the celebration of the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations with Vietnam.

Crown Prince Akishino expressed his deep gratitude for the warm welcome that Vietnam has given to Emperor Naruhito, Emperor Akihito, Empress Michiko, as well as Crown Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko when visiting Vietnam.

Crown Prince Akishino attended the ceremony celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan taking place in Hanoi on September 21.

The Crown Prince emphasized that the friendship between the two countries has been cultivated for more than 1,000 years, from trade activities and relationships that began in the 8th century. `Japan – Vietnam exchanges have developed steadily.

Crown Prince Akishino said he met families of Japanese veterans who stayed in Vietnam after World War II ended and joined the Viet Minh to fight against the French colonialists.

`After Vietnam gained independence, these families went through many difficulties because the veterans were advised to return to Japan. However, I was deeply moved to know that the exchange and connection still continued.`

The Crown Prince expressed his hope that this visit will contribute to further tightening mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

Standing member of the Secretariat and Chairwoman of the Vietnam – Japan Parliamentary Friendship Group Truong Thi Mai emphasized that the two countries have joined hands to cultivate a friendly and cooperative relationship with the foundation of cultural similarities and strong bonds.

Ms. Truong Thi Mai believes that the two countries will continue their future journey `hand in hand`, with stronger, more cohesive and more effective cooperation.

The visit of Crown Prince Akishino and the Princess took place on September 20-25, at the invitation of the Vietnamese government.

Crown Prince Akishino today met with Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan, affirming that Vietnam is a close, trustworthy and companion partner of Japan, affirming that he will continue to make efforts for cooperative relations.
