England, Spain, Germany and Italy have four teams entering the Champions League directly

Currently, La Liga, Bundesliga, and Premier League only have the top three clubs in each tournament with the right to enter the Champions League group stage directly.

Currently in Serie A, only the top two clubs in the tournament have the right to directly enter the Champions League group stage, while the third-placed team must go through two rounds of play-off rounds.

Expanding the scope of the Champions League helps giants like the Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga and Serie A not have to fight hard for a place in the group stage.

However, according to the plan to change the scale of the Champions League, all four of Europe’s top national championships will be guaranteed to have four automatic representatives participating in the Champions League group stage from the 2018-19 season.

UEFA issued an official announcement, after final detailed discussions on Friday, August 26.

The top four European national championships will be determined by UEFA’s coefficient points, calculated according to the achievements of clubs participating in the Champions League as well as the Europa League in the previous five seasons.

According to the current position table, the top four national leagues in UEFA are Spain (La Liga), Germany (Bundesliga), England (Premier League) and Italy (Serie A).

The European football leadership organization is forced to consider a plan to change the format for the most prestigious tournament, after more and more discussions with the participation of a number of leading clubs about the possibility of establishing a new tournament.

But any adjustments related to the current format of the Champions League can only start from the summer of 2018, because that is the start of a new cycle of commercial contracts between UEFA and its partners.

Stable teams in the top 4 like Roma will not have to worry about being eliminated before the group stage as they are this season – losing to Porto in the play-off round.

Spain and Italy are said to be the two tournaments putting the most pressure on UEFA in its plan to change the Champions League format.

When the plan of four teams entering the group stage directly was approved, Serie A was the tournament that benefited the most.

This season, Italy will only have two representatives participating in the Champions League group stage, because Roma in the middle of this week lost to Porto after two preliminary matches.
