Leaders of countries express condolences on the death of the Iranian President

Vietnam and many countries such as Syria, Russia, and China sent their condolences to Iran after President Raisi died in a helicopter crash.

President Ebrahim Raisi, 63 years old, and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, 60 years old, along with a number of senior officials, died on May 19 in a helicopter accident in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province.

Acting President Vo Thi Anh Xuan and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent a telegram of condolences to Acting President of Iran Mohammad Mokhber, and Chairman of the National Assembly Tran Thanh Man sent a telegram of condolences to Chairman of the Iranian National Assembly Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf.

Lebanon, a country with close relations with Iran, today declared three days of national mourning to commemorate Mr. Raisi and the Foreign Minister.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad expressed solidarity with his ally Iran, the country that has supported him throughout years of war.

President Vladimir Putin described Mr. Raisi as an `outstanding politician` who spent his entire life serving his country.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was `shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic passing` of President Raisi.

India and Iran have historically had close ties.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan praised President Raisi as a `valuable colleague and brother`.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that immediately after learning of the accident, Ankara contacted Iranian authorities and mobilized all means to support search and rescue efforts.

China’s Foreign Ministry said President Xi Jinping sent his condolences to Iran, calling this a `great loss` for the Iranian people.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said that `an unimaginable tragedy has robbed a country of strong bilateral relations with South Africa of outstanding leadership`.

Mr. Ramaphosa visited Iran as vice president in 2015. In 2023, he welcomed President Raisi to the BRICS group summit in Johannesburg and invited Tehran to join.

Leaders of Iraq, Jordan, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Egypt, Malaysia, European Council President Charles Michel, NATO representatives… also sent their condolences to Iran.

Tehran-backed armed groups in the region praised the Iranian President’s support for them.

The Lebanese group Hezbollah calls Mr. Raisi the `protector` of anti-Israel groups in the region.

Hamas praised Mr. Raisi for supporting the Palestinians and the fight against Israel, expressing confidence that Iran will overcome the great loss.
